Couple in court for possession of drugs

A husband and wife appeared in the Suva Magistrates Court charged with one count each of unlawful possession of marijuana.

Abdul Shamid and Nazmeen Nisha were found in possession of 96.2 grams of the drug in their home at Nanuku Settlement, Vatuwaqa, Suva on Tuesday.

Full phase disclosures were served by the Police prosecutor who objected to bail on the ground that the accused couple were under investigation for seized items found when their home was searched, and also made an application for destruction of the drugs.

The husband and wife both have pending cases before the Suva Magistrates Court.

Mr Shamid told the court he claimed responsibility for the drugs found in their possession, claiming they were for his personal use and that Ms Nisha did not know anything about the drugs.

He pleaded guilty to the charge while Ms Nisha pleaded not guilty.

Their lawyer told the court the couple’s two young children had been without their mother for four days and asked if she could be released on bail to care for her children.

The matter was adjourned to Monday for a separate summary of facts to be prepared for Mr Shamid, and rulings on Ms Nisha’s bail and the destruction application.

Both accused were remanded in custody.
