Nausori market vendor Zabin Raj says she lost more than $500 worth of vegetables during the recent three-day snap lockdown and that set the stage for a scaled-down Eid celebration this week.

She said things were so bad that this would be the first year her family members would not be wearing new clothes to mark the
Muslim celebration.

“This year’s Eid will not be like before where we were excited and prepared many sweets,” the 56-year-old said.

“Before I used to have more than 100 people visit my place but this year we cannot gather.

“I cannot afford it anyway.”

Ms Raj said she was the only breadwinner in her family.

“My husband was farming but after the lockdown, he is not earning as he cannot go to Suva so everyone depends on me.”

Ms Raj said the COVID-19 containment had hit her hard with earnings down by 50 per cent.
