Interim Fiji 7s coach Saiasi Fuli believes heading to the first leg of the World Rugby Sevens Series has the Olympic gold medal champions in the cross-hairs, with overseas opponents “no doubt eager to exploit a very young and uninitiated team early on”.

“Yes, it always brings a tough challenge,” Fuli said during a training session at Albert Park, Suva yesterday.

“There has been a lot of work behind the scenes to also look at the top opposition teams on the other side, we have to continue to move forward and prepare ourselves well.”

The departure of former Fiji 7s coach Gareth Baber and 13 players from last season’s campaign left a slight void, but Fuli said with eager hands put up, they were ready to fill the spots, roping in considerable talent to fill a 26 member extended squad.

“We have checked for the best players available locally to join the squad.

“It is a mixture of mixing our old players including Josua Vakurinabili, Kaminieli Rasaku and Josefa Talacolo to name a few with a lot of new players.”

Fuli said every player had the opportunity to make the final cut and would depend on the hardwork that was done over the next four weeks.

“They are working extra hard to try and impress the management, they have been knocking hard for the past few seasons and this is a good time for them.”
