Fisherman’s plans shattered

If you have nothing in your pocket, what can you give? This was the lament by Lautoka fisherman Faruk Feroz Ali whose plans for Eid Mubarak this year took a back seat after he could not sustain his fishing business.
“Right now we are relying on food donations from the $90 assistance and from the Fiji Muslim League,” he said.
“I haven’t been able to go out to sea after the lockdown.”
He said, as a result, their plans for the annual Islamic celebrations would be a small family affair.
“The usual practice is for us to help those in need, but this year I won’t be able to do that.
“I’m just surviving on what I am given. “I have fishermen who depend on my boat to go out to catch fish.
“All of them don’t have much at home and for me, it’s hard to take care of them because I have my own family.”
