Permanent secretary for the Ministry of Health Dr James Fong has referred allegations of soldiers breaching COVID-19 quarantine protocols at a quarantine facility in Nadi to the Republic of Fiji Military Forces Commander Viliame Naupoto.

Dr Fong said he forwarded a screenshot of the post to Commander Naupoto.

“COVID indiscipline is a major issue in Fiji,” he said.

“Those who man our frontlines need to be held to a higher standard of discipline and I will continue to work with all stakeholders on this issue.”

Questions sent to Commander Naupoto remained unanswered.

A social media post by a woman who had a family member in a quarantine facility claimed the woman was approached by a soldier who asked if he and others could drink alcohol in her room.

When she refused, she claimed he then invited her to leave the room to go drinking elsewhere with the other soldiers.

The post also claimed authorities were contacted and the issue was immediately addressed.
