Positive energy – New kids spark team

Fijian 7s head coach Gareth Baber believes the positive energy provided by the new players in the 18-member national squad is ultimately lifting the standards at training as the side prepares for the PacificAus Sports Oceania Sevens which starts in Townsville, Australia this Friday.

Iosefo Masikau (Tabadamu), Joseva Talacolo (Police), Taniela Sadrugu (Nabua), Rusiate Nasove (Police), Jiuta Wainiqolo (Nabua), Kaminieli Rasaku (Uluinakau) and Sireli Maqala (Nabua) are the newcomers in the team.

According to Baber, the energy and the quality provided by these players were keeping the experienced players on their toes.

He said they had adapted well to the training system.

“Sometimes that comes quicker and sometimes it is a bit slower but I think for the young men now they are looking forward to the likes of Oceania 7s and potentially for Olympic selection and are getting the idea what it is all about.

“That is powerful when you know the energy of young players and the quality that they have got and with the driving ambition that is keeping the more experienced players on their toes.

“Ultimately it is driving the standards up with the quality of the training sessions through the reviews and generally the atmosphere of the squad.

“I’m looking forward and I’m sure that it all comes together against top opposition like Australia and New Zealand. We will take the hits and we will get errors and those are things that we need to work on. It is how quickly we can learn from them, put them in their place and get better,” Baber said.
