Ball possession is a vital component in rugby 7s. The Team Fiji men’s rugby 7s team has been working on this area especially with their kick offs and restarts as the side build’s up for the Tokyo Olympic
Games.

Team Fiji men’s rugby 7s coach Gareth Baber said they did this well in this department at the PacificAus Sports Oceania 7s tournament in Australia last month however it was not a 100 per cent.

He said they had to be more effective from when they play in the World Rugby HSBC Sevens Series creating pressure from their starts.

“The key element in rugby 7s is controlling possession and we are never far away from controlling possession particularly from our restarts.

“I was pleased with the intensity in Australia but I know that is not a done deal because when you come against Australia and New Zealand, they will review what we have done and then work out how they can lift their intensity.

“I do know that in those games we were getting the right balance between the control of the ball with use of power and pace. That hasn’t changed and that’s the nature of the game and that’s the nature of rugby union. Fiji face Japan in the opening match at 12pm next Monday and then play Canada at 8pm. Fiji’s final pool game is against Great Britain at at 12.30pm the following day.
