People are more focused on undermining ministry’s efforts – Dr Fong

Health Ministry permanent secretary Dr James Fong says it is unfortunate that given the scale of the COVID-19 epidemic in Fiji, people are more focused on undermining the ministry’s efforts.

He said this in response to a video that surfaced on social media recently, which showed how dead bodies were being kept at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital temporary morgue.

The video showed a container located outside the mortuary which was full of dead bodies.

Dr Fong said they had addressed the issue.

“Fortunately, together with our private sector partners, we have expanded our morgue space to address this issue,” he said.

“This supportive effort by Suva Morgue Services highlights the positive spirit that is well appreciated by the Ministry of Health and Medical Services.”

When asked if funerals could be arranged on a daily basis, Dr Fong said, “We have a group tasked to facilitate this objective.”

Dr Fong said as of Tuesday this week, the seven-day average of new cases per day was 1046 or 1182 cases per million population per day.

He said with the high numbers of new daily cases, the ministry was also seeing increasing cases of severe disease and deaths.
